How to Reduce Lag and Play Online Games Smoothly on Jio and Airtel in India

Lag is the most frustrating thing about online gaming in India. You are in the middle of a perfect Valorant round or a clutch BGMI moment and suddenly everything freezes. Your internet connection is the problem and here is exactly how to fix it without spending money on a new connection.

Why Indian Internet Causes So Much Gaming Lag

Most Indian students use Jio or Airtel mobile data or basic broadband for gaming. These connections are not bad — they are just not optimised for gaming by default. High ping, packet loss, and unstable connections are the result of using a connection that was designed for browsing and streaming rather than real time online gaming.

The good news is you can fix most of these problems for free with the right settings and habits.

Fix 1 — Switch from WiFi to Wired Connection

This is the single biggest improvement you can make. WiFi signals fluctuate constantly — walls, other devices, and interference from neighbouring networks all cause your ping to spike unpredictably.

A wired ethernet connection is stable, faster, and dramatically reduces ping. Buy a basic ethernet cable on Amazon for under ₹200 and connect your laptop directly to your router. Most students who do this see their ping drop by 30 to 50 percent immediately.

Fix 2 — Change Your DNS Server

Your default DNS server provided by Jio or Airtel is often slow and overloaded. Changing it to a faster DNS server reduces the time it takes for your game to communicate with its servers.

Here is how to change it on Windows:

Go to Control Panel, then Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Centre. Click on your connection, then Properties, then Internet Protocol Version 4. Select Use the following DNS server addresses and enter these:

Preferred DNS — 8.8.8.8 Alternate DNS — 8.8.4.4

These are Google's free DNS servers and they are significantly faster than most ISP provided DNS servers for gaming in India.

Fix 3 — Select the Right Game Server

Most online games let you select which server region you connect to. Indian players should always select the servers in this order of preference — Mumbai, Singapore, and then Dubai. Never select European or American servers — the distance alone adds 150 to 300ms of ping making smooth gameplay impossible.

Check your in-game settings and make sure you are always connecting to the closest available server to your location in India.

Fix 4 — Close Background Apps Before Gaming

Every app running in the background on your computer is using your internet connection even when you are not actively using it. Windows Update, Google Chrome, Discord, and dozens of other apps constantly send and receive data which steals bandwidth from your game.

Before starting any online gaming session press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Go to the Network column and close every app that is using significant data. This alone can reduce lag noticeably on slower connections.

Fix 5 — Use Gaming Mode on Your Router

Most modern routers — including many Jio and Airtel provided routers — have a gaming mode or QoS setting that prioritises gaming traffic over other types of internet usage. This means when you are gaming your router gives your game data priority over someone else streaming YouTube on the same network.

Log into your router settings by typing 192.168.1.1 in your browser. Look for gaming mode or QoS settings and enable them. If you cannot find this option your router may not support it but it is worth checking.

Fix 6 — Game During Off Peak Hours

Indian internet is slowest between 8pm and 11pm when millions of people are streaming videos and browsing social media simultaneously. If you have flexibility try gaming between 6am and 10am or after midnight when network traffic is much lower and your connection is significantly faster and more stable.

This is especially useful for Jio users since Jio offers free data after midnight on many plans — you get faster internet and free data simultaneously.

Fix 7 — Upgrade Your Jio or Airtel Plan Strategically

If you are gaming on mobile data consider switching to a Jio Fiber or Airtel Xstream broadband plan. Entry level plans start at ₹399 per month and offer significantly better gaming performance than mobile data.

If broadband is not available in your area the Jio 5G plans available in major Indian cities offer dramatically lower ping than 4G for gaming — usually under 20ms compared to 50 to 100ms on 4G.

Fix 8 — Update Your Network Drivers

Outdated network drivers on Windows can cause connection instability and lag. Go to Device Manager, find Network Adapters, right click on your WiFi or ethernet adapter, and select Update Driver. This takes two minutes and can solve random lag spikes that have no other obvious cause.

What Ping Numbers Mean for Gaming

Under 30ms — Excellent, smooth gameplay 30 to 60ms — Good, most games play well 60 to 100ms — Acceptable, occasional stutters 100 to 150ms — Poor, noticeable lag Above 150ms — Unplayable for competitive games

Aim for under 60ms for the best gaming experience. With a wired connection and the DNS fix most Indian students can achieve this on Jio Fiber or Airtel Xstream.

Final Thoughts

You do not need an expensive gaming router or a premium internet plan to reduce lag. Start with the free fixes — switch to wired, change your DNS, close background apps, and select the right game server. These four changes alone will make a noticeable difference in your gaming experience today.

Game smoother. Grind harder.
